Publications International, Ltd.Picture the sun shining brightly and the palm trees gently swaying in the breeze—this is the tropical beach scene you're about to draw. The process can be as soothing as the scene itself.

Each step comes with a helpful illustration followed by a detailed description. Use the red lines in the illustrations to understand precisely what to draw at each stage, and gray lines will show you what was drawn in previous steps.
1. Begin with a Sailboat on the Horizon

Draw a soft horizon line around the center of your page. Create the boat's hull with a long rectangle that has a sharply pointed front or bow. For the sail, sketch a triangle with curved sides and a flat bottom. Draw a second, gentle curve beneath the boat to depict the shoreline.
2. Add Palm Trees and Waves Crashing on the Shore

Draw the palm tree trunks using two curved lines that narrow as they rise. Add rounded shapes on the beach to represent coconuts and rocks. Use wavy lines near the shore to indicate the movement of waves, extending them with simple lines.
3. Draw the Palm Fronds

Outline the large, sweeping palm fronds at the top of the trees. Add jagged details around the trees and rocks to define the contours of the beach.
4. Add Texture to Your Drawing
Define the palm leaves with long, sharp lines as illustrated. Add curved lines to the boat's sail to create stripes. Draw additional waves on the water's surface. Use short strokes on the first wave's front edge. Detail the coconuts with tiny lines.
5. Add Shading to Complete Your Drawing

Shade one side of the tree trunks, the sailboat, and the rock using a series of diagonal parallel lines. Add finishing touches with dots and squiggly lines to represent the foam from a breaking wave. Include several lines on the water’s surface for texture.
Your landscape drawing is now complete! Even if your first attempt isn’t perfect, keep practicing until you’re satisfied with your result.
