Insights from the Laurie David and Heather Reisman Interview
Laurie explains the motivation behind creating a guide for a greener lifestyle:
It’s not about achieving perfection but making progress. We’ve all heard the saying that perfection is the enemy of good—and it truly is. That word was designed to make people feel inadequate. It’s about starting the journey. Once you take the first steps, you’ll naturally do more. The book emphasizes that this is a joyful practice, not just for the planet but for our personal well-being too.
Heather explains why recycling isn’t the ultimate solution to our waste crisis:
Recycling addresses the issue at the tail end of the problem. The product has already been created, distributed, and has impacted us with its chemical footprint. Philosophically, the goal should be to tackle the problem at its source by preventing such items from entering our lives in the first place. Additionally, less than 10% of the plastic we attempt to recycle actually gets recycled. Much of it isn’t recyclable to begin with, and the cost of processing recycled plastic often exceeds that of producing new plastic. The economics are challenging, even for the small percentage that is recycled, as it requires specialized facilities and processes. The ultimate goal is to drastically reduce our plastic consumption.
Heather shares tips on adopting a greener lifestyle when finances are tight:
There was a time when I lived paycheck to paycheck as a single mother with two children. If I were in that situation again, armed with my current knowledge, and could choose one change to benefit the environment, I would reduce my meat consumption as much as possible. That’s the step I would take to make a meaningful contribution.
