Much like weightlifting, running yields the best results when your body maintains the correct posture. While practice drills can help you master this posture, it’s often challenging to gauge your accuracy mid-run. Lumo Run, a clip-on sensor, provides the insights you need.
Once you attach the Bluetooth-enabled sensor to the back of your pants and sync it with your phone, the app requires a ten-minute run to gather initial data. It then evaluates your performance across five key metrics: cadence (steps per minute), bounce (vertical hip movement), braking (deceleration upon foot impact), and your pelvis’s tilt and rotation.
During my trial, the app identified cadence as my primary focus area. I fell short of the ideal 180 steps per minute, so it suggested aiming for 176 steps initially. Once I achieved that, the app would incrementally increase its target.
On my next run, the app recommended a quick warm-up: 30 seconds of rapid stepping. The standout feature, however, was the real-time feedback. While tracking distance and pace like other running apps, Lumo also provided form reminders. Every mile, it checked if I met the 176-step target and offered practical tips, such as visualizing running through a puddle without splashing. Despite the simplicity, it worked—I consistently hit my goal by the run’s end.
The Lumo Run is priced at $99 for the clip-on version or $199 when integrated into shorts or capris. (The sensor is machine-washable.) While it may be excessive for casual runners, those deeply committed to improving their form—enough to hire a coach—might find the Lumo Run a worthwhile investment.
