Madelyn Cline, the star of Outer Banks, is typically recognized for her long, sun-kissed blonde locks. This fall, she made a daring choice by opting for a chic and easy-to-manage bob, which her stylist dubbed the 'beach bob.'
We spoke with the celebrity stylist about this trendy haircut, discussing why it’s perfect for the shifting seasons, how it compares to other popular cuts, and the best way to achieve and style it at home—no heat required (because this cut is just that effortless).
What exactly is the Beach Bob?
The beach bob is a mid-length lob, a style that transitions from late summer into early fall. Celebrity hairstylist Marc Mena explains that this cut features longer layers in the back and several angled layers in the front, providing a balanced yet chic look that works effortlessly.
Mena highlights a variety of stylish cuts for fall, and when we spotted Madelaine Petsch rocking a chic shag cut, we had to know how it differed. “The ‘midsummer shag’ introduced in July 2024 incorporates more layers while maintaining lighter ends,” Mena says. Despite having similar lengths, the lighter ends make the shag cut more ideal for the heat of summer.
“The ‘beach bob’ features heavier layers in the front, which create that signature bob effect,” Mena explains. These weighty layers make the cut perfect for the early fall, and as it grows, endless styling opportunities open up, says Mena and Cline.
“The length and shape of the haircut make it easy to transition from summer into fall,” Mena notes. “By the time autumn arrives, we'll have more length to experiment with, creating ponytails and updos that are better suited to the cooler season.”
What should you ask your stylist?
The beach bob is all about strategically angling and layering the hair so it falls just below the shoulders with movement, yet maintains its shape. “Request longer layers in the back with more angles and layers at the front, around the clavicle, while keeping the hairline blunt,” advises Mena. Designed to transition into fall, this cut requires minimal upkeep.
Mena explains that the beach bob is incredibly versatile, allowing for various looks, whether you let your hair air dry into natural beachy waves or curl it for a softer, baroque bob effect. To ensure you get the most out of this cut, make sure your stylist takes your hair's natural texture into account when dry. The length should factor in curl shrinkage for the best results.
How to air dry and style your beach bob
For those seeking low-maintenance styling, Mena believes this cut is ideal for air drying, drastically reducing the time spent styling with tools. Here are his recommended steps to take your beach bob from damp to styled without the need for heat tools.
- Begin by applying a mousse (Mena suggests using Maria Nila’s Pure Volume Mousse) to damp hair, working it in from root to tip with a scrunching motion for even coverage.
- Next, twist your hair into a topknot and secure it at the top of your head with a clip.
- Allow your hair to set until it’s nearly dry.
- Once the hair is about 90% dry, remove the clip and let the hair fall naturally, finishing the drying process to achieve a textured, voluminous beach bob.
