iPhone/Android: Need a fast and simple floor plan for your home? The free MagicPlan app can generate one using only your phone's camera.
A few years back, I built my own home, which meant spending countless hours figuring out floor plans and estimating materials. By the end, I knew the dimensions of every room down to the inch. But who has the time for that? So, when I moved into my new (150-year-old) farmhouse with completely different room sizes, I decided to let my iPhone handle it. That's when I discovered MagicPlan.
The app uses your phone’s camera to capture the dimensions of each room, allowing you to measure your entire house in just minutes—far quicker than spending hours with a tape measure. The measurements are precise enough for planning, though I still suggest pulling out a tape measure when it’s time to actually build.
You can also keep a digital copy of your floor plans in your pocket at all times.
Not everyone is constantly renovating their home, but I can't see a reason not to use the free version of this app to keep a floor plan handy. Instead of pulling out a tape measure whenever you're buying new furniture or rugs, you can have everything you need stored in one place.
You can also export your floor plans as a PDF. The free version includes a watermark, but it doesn't obstruct the readability of the plans or dimensions. Give it a try using the links below.
