By caring for your woodworking tools, you’ll extend their performance. Set up a cleaning station to easily tackle dirt, rust, and resin buildup on your blades and bits.
Table saw and mitre saw blades, along with router bits, need proper upkeep to stay sharp. Over time, resin accumulates, and if you're working outdoors, rust can form more easily. A blade that seems dull may just be dirty.
In the video above, The Wood Whisperer demonstrates his cleaning station, which allows him to clean several blades at once with ease.
Start by soaking your blade or bit in a cleaning solution like Rockler's Pitch and Resin Remover for five minutes. You can also use Simple Green or generic oven cleaner, although their effectiveness may vary. After soaking, use an old toothbrush or scotch brite pad to remove the grime, making sure to wipe in the direction of the blade.
Once finished, rinse your blade with water to remove any cleaner, then use a blow dryer to make sure your blade is completely dry. Before storing it, apply a dry lubricant such as BladeCote to extend its lifespan. Watch the video for a detailed guide.
