“When it feels coarse, fragile, or straw-like, it’s desperately in need of hydration,” explains Marquita Lynch, a renowned stylist and natural hair care specialist. “Dry hair also loses its shine and vitality—no matter how many oil-based products you apply.”
Conversely, well-hydrated hair (and scalp) boasts more vibrancy, flexibility, and movement. So, what’s the key to maintaining hair moisture? We consulted top stylists for their expert advice and techniques.
Prioritize Lightweight Hydration
Before opting for heavy deep conditioners or hot oils, consider lighter alternatives. “Begin by integrating water-based products into your regimen,” Lynch advises. “You can’t retain moisture that isn’t present, so it’s crucial to use products that infuse hydration into your hair.”
Seal in Hydration with Oils and Creams
Once you’ve addressed lightweight hydration, you can secure that added moisture with creams or oil-based products. This also aids in sealing the cuticle for a glossier appearance. “Not every oil suits all hair types,” notes Clyde Haygood, a celebrity hairstylist and Pura D’Or ambassador. “Fine hair benefits from lighter oils that don’t weigh it down, while coarse hair requires richer oils.”
Weekly Deep Conditioning
In addition to daily lightweight and sealing products, pamper your hair with a weekly deep conditioning treatment to enhance moisture levels.
“For optimal results, leave the treatment in for a minimum of 10 to 15 minutes,” suggests celebrity stylist Rogerio Cavalcante, founder of The Second Floor Salon. “A professional tip is to apply heat while the deep conditioning treatment is on. Heat helps open the hair cuticle, enabling the conditioner to absorb more effectively. You can use a heat cap, sit under a hooded dryer, or wrap your hair in a warm towel during the process.”
Try Co-Washing for Added Moisture
Rather than shampooing and conditioning every wash, try co-washing your hair to enhance hydration. This method is particularly beneficial for frequent washers. Co-washing means skipping shampoo and cleansing your hair with conditioner, as Cavalcante explains. “This preserves natural oils and prevents moisture loss,” he adds.
Opt for Hydrating Dry Shampoos
Dry shampoo is an excellent way to refresh your style without shampooing. Some products even include hydrating and nourishing ingredients, according to Cavalcante.
Opt for Ionic Technology When Blow Drying
While blow drying is often unavoidable, it’s known to cause dryness and damage. Rather than completely avoiding heat styling, reduce its frequency and invest in high-quality tools.
“Choose ionic hair dryers, as they are less likely to damage hair compared to traditional ones,” recommends Kseniya Kobets, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist. Ionic dryers emit negative ions that break down water molecules, reducing drying time and minimizing frizz for healthier, shinier, and more manageable hair.
Choose Ceramic or Tourmaline-Plated Styling Tools
When styling, ensure you’re using premium curling and flat irons. Ceramic and tourmaline plates ensure even heat distribution and smoother gliding, reducing hot spots and tugging while helping to retain moisture for a sleek, glossy finish.
Nighttime Hair Protection
A frequently missed step in maintaining hair moisture is nighttime care. “Cotton pillowcases can strip moisture, so I suggest using a satin scarf or pillowcase to prevent overnight dryness,” Lynch advises. “You can also lightly spritz your hair with water and add a few drops of sealing oil before bed to lock in hydration as you sleep.”
Target Scalp Treatments at the Roots
For issues like dandruff or an itchy scalp, Dr. Kobets suggests applying scalp treatment products directly to the roots. “If using shampoos with salicylic acid or ketoconazole, avoid applying them to the hair strands, as they can cause dryness,” she explains. Always follow the product instructions or your doctor’s guidance.
