For years, I've kept a 'to buy' list where I add items as I think of them throughout the year, revising and streamlining as necessary. Currently, it’s fairly brief, with a water purifier, artwork for my apartment, and wireless headphones for running.
However, in order to reach my financial goals this year, I realize what I really need is the opposite: A 'Do Not Buy' list. It’s like a no-spend month, but more comprehensive and adaptable. This list includes items you’ve bought in the past that you know aren’t worth repeating, inspired by The Financial Diet.
The purpose is clear: Pinpoint what you don’t truly need, so that when temptation strikes again, you can pause and reflect on where your priorities truly lie.
Here’s what I’m avoiding this summer:
Fast fashion—I rarely find satisfaction in anything I purchase from places like H&M or Forever 21, and they usually end up donated a few months later (and the Salvation Army definitely doesn’t need any more black synthetic tops or poorly fitting, unlined skirts).
Most makeup—Every summer, I convince myself to try something 'fresh' and 'on trend' with my makeup. But I’m hopeless at anything more complicated than a simple look, and I rarely use the products I buy (except for lipstick and mascara). So, no more orange eyeshadow or blush sticks for me.
Impulse books from the Strand—When work gets stressful or I find myself with free time during lunch, I sometimes wander over to the Strand bookstore nearby and pick up a book or two. Some are ones I’ve heard of, others are new discoveries. But more often than not, I end up not liking them. The cost adds up!
Apartment trinkets—Since I’ve recently moved, I’ve been buying a lot of things for my new apartment. While big items like a couch are obviously necessary, other purchases just aren’t as important. Things like random 'decorative' objects or cheap wall prints. I’d rather save up and buy something meaningful for my walls.
So, what’s on your 'Do Not Buy' list for the summer?
