While fruit juices are often debated for their sugar content, many of them offer a wealth of nutrients that stir some debate about their health benefits. Popular in South and Southeast Asia as a cool relief from the heat, mango juice is loaded with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that can enhance immune health. But does its nutritional value outweigh its sugar content? Is mango juice truly a healthy choice? We consulted with nutrition experts to get the full scoop.
Is Mango Juice Good for You?
The short answer? Yes, in moderation—but it also hinges on finding the healthiest options available, according to registered dietitian Christopher Mohr. “The healthiness of your mango juice depends on its preparation and sugar content,” he explains. “Opt for products that are 100% fruit juice rather than fruit drinks that aren’t made with real juice.” Next time you’re at the grocery store, take a moment to check the nutrition label on your preferred mango juice brands.
Mango juice is packed with vitamin A and C (which enhance your immune system and vision), potassium, and magnesium. However, its most potent nutrient is antioxidants. “Mango juice contains antioxidants like mangiferin, which may help protect against cellular damage,” says Mohr. “It’s also beneficial for hydration, though it should never replace water.” Additionally, mangoes can aid digestion thanks to the natural enzymes found in both the fruit and its juice.
The Benefits of Mango Juice
To truly grasp the top benefits of mango juice, let’s take a closer look at what makes it a tasty, refreshing, and fairly healthy drink option.
Boosts Immune Health
Packed with antioxidants, mango juice can enhance immune function, according to registered dietitian Michelle Routhenstein. "Antioxidants like beta-carotene aid immune function and safeguard against cell damage," she explains. "These nutrients can support overall health, including heart health, by decreasing oxidative stress and inflammation."
Boosts Heart Health
Oxidative stress occurs when there is an imbalance of free radicals and oxidants in the body, which can negatively affect cardiovascular health, according to Routhenstein. Drinking mango juice may help reduce oxidative stress and promote heart health. However, it’s important to continue consuming actual heart-healthy foods as well.
Aids in Reducing Inflammation
Mangiferin is a potent antioxidant. Besides its ability to prevent cellular damage, mangiferin also possesses anti-inflammatory properties, helping protect vital organs like the heart and colon.
Comparing Store-Bought and Homemade Mango Juice
Store-bought mango juice tends to be tastier than homemade versions, though it often comes with added sugars. As Routhenstein points out, "Homemade mango juice can be a healthier choice if you avoid extra sugar," noting that its inherent sweetness might require adjustments, like diluting it or using whole mangoes, which add fiber and help manage blood sugar levels.
Mohr provides further tips on enhancing the nutritional value of homemade mango juice without compromising on taste. "I like to mix it with seltzer for some fizz while preserving the mango flavor," he suggests. "If you're preparing it at home, you could also add some of the pulp back into the juice for added fiber." And most importantly, balance your juice intake with a diet rich in fruits and vegetables.
