Overview: American marigolds (T. erecta) are tall, reaching up to 36 inches, though newer varieties have been bred to be shorter. Their flowers are large, fully double, and come in shades of yellow, gold, and orange. French marigolds (T. patula) are more compact with bushier growth and smaller flowers. Triploids, a hybrid between American and French marigolds, resemble the French variety but feature larger blooms.
Growing Tips: Marigolds thrive in full sunlight and prefer moist, well-drained soil, although they can handle drier conditions. Plant them outdoors once the risk of frost has passed. Space French marigolds 6 to 10 inches apart, while American varieties should be spaced 10 to 18 inches apart.
Propagation: You can sow seeds directly in the ground after the last frost or start them indoors four weeks earlier. Seeds will germinate within five to seven days at temperatures ranging from 65 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit.
Uses: Position taller marigolds towards the back or center of flower beds and borders, or place them in full sun containers or as pocket plantings.
Scientific Name: Tagetes patula, Tagetes erecta
