Courtesy of Publications International, Ltd.The poppy is among the most vibrant flowering plants in the world. Its striking red hue and tendency to grow in clusters make it visible from afar, even miles away. Poppies also come in various colors like white, pink, yellow, orange, and blue.
In this section, we’ll guide you through drawing the poppy shown above. You can either draw it freehand while observing your screen or print this page for a closer look at each step.
Follow the red lines in each image to see exactly what to draw at each stage. Lines from previous steps are shown in gray. We’ll provide an illustration for every step along with detailed instructions on how to complete it.
1. Draw the Basic Outline

Gently sketch a large oval shape for the flower and a smaller circle for the bud. Use flowing lines to draw the stems, and sketch three more curved lines to indicate the position of the leaves.
2. Draw the Flower Petals

Sketch the petals in a rough triangular shape using wavy lines. Draw an arc in the center of the flower. Outline the bud and form the petals with a wavy, Y-shaped line. Add a second line to each stem.
3. Detail the Petals and Leaves

Carefully refine the petals using wavy lines to create a ruffled effect along the edges. Add two inner petals as shown. Use curved lines to sketch leaf shapes with distinct, deep notches along the edges.
4. Add Stems and Veins
Create the flower’s center by drawing several inverted V-shaped lines. Above them, add a row of small ovals. Then, draw the two stems, ensuring the sides are as smooth as possible.
For the right leaf, add veins with branching, using curved double lines. The other two leaves are visible only from the sides, so draw veins extending from the smooth line to the irregular line.
5. Add Shading and Final Touches
Add numerous small dots and short lines to the flower's center. Use short lines to shade the edges of the petals and leaves, varying their length for a more realistic effect.
Shade the bottom portions of the flower and bud. Use very short lines to add shading to one side of each stem. Add a few tiny spikes at the top of each stem using short, V-shaped lines.
Take a bow – your poppy drawing is finished! Now, let’s move on to another breathtaking creation: the vibrant, golden yellow daffodil.
