The spider plant stands out as one of the most beloved houseplants globally. Known for its decorative appeal and remarkable air-purifying qualities, it’s a favorite among plant enthusiasts.
In this segment, we’ll guide you through sketching the spider plant shown above. Whether you prefer drawing freehand while referencing your screen or printing this page for a detailed view, we’ve got you covered.
Trace the red lines in every illustration to understand precisely what to sketch in each step. Previous steps are highlighted in gray. We’ll provide a visual guide for each stage, followed by clear instructions to help you bring your drawing to life.
1. Outline the Plant

Begin by lightly drawing the plant pot. Start with a softly curved, four-sided shape for the rim. Below it, draw a shorter, similar shape for the saucer. Use smooth, curved lines to connect the two, forming the sides of the pot.
Add numerous long, slender, curved leaves to your sketch. Allow some leaves to drape over the pot's edge, and indicate depth by overlapping some leaves behind others.
Achieve this by stopping the lines of some leaves where they intersect with the front leaves. Draw three long, curved stems extending below the pot's base.
2. More Leaves

Enhance the plant by adding more leaves around and behind the existing ones. At the tips of the stems, sketch additional slender, elongated leaves to represent the baby plants.
Draw the second side for each stem. Include a fourth stem at the pot's base, complete with long, narrow leaves that overlap the adjacent stem.
3. Pot and Roots

Redraw the pot, ensuring the lines are interrupted where the leaves overlap it. Add small oval-shaped roots at the base of each baby plant.
4. Veins

Add a central vein to most of the leaves using a long, curved line that mirrors the leaf's shape.
5. Details and Shading

Use curved lines to shade the undersides of the leaves, following their natural shape. Add depth by darkening the leaves near the pot with numerous short strokes. Enhance the pot's texture with brief, curved lines along its sides.
This was a challenging task, but the intricate details of the spider plant make it worthwhile. Take a moment to appreciate your effort. Next up, discover how to draw an orchid.
