Drawing becomes effortless with basic tools and our detailed, step-by-step guides.
Getty Creative: PhotodiscBecoming an artist is simpler than it seems. Every drawing can be divided into manageable steps. By following these steps, you'll quickly master sketching everything from animals and plants to structures, vehicles, trains, and even dinosaurs!
To start your drawing journey, gather essential supplies like a pencil, sharpener, eraser, felt-tip pen, and paper. Each tutorial begins with a finished example of the subject. Study its lines and shapes closely before diving into the first step.
Each tutorial begins with fundamental shapes like ovals, rectangles, and triangles, tailored to the subject. Sketch the complete shape, even if parts will be hidden in the final artwork. Red lines in the illustrations highlight what to draw in each step, with previous steps displayed in gray.
Once all steps are finished, trace the pencil lines with a felt-tip pen. Only ink the lines you wish to retain. Allow the ink to dry, then erase any unnecessary pencil marks.
After inking your drawing, the next phase is adding color. The following section will guide you through coloring techniques.
How to Add Color to Drawings
A splash of color brings this charming red caboose illustration to life.
Publications International, Ltd.The final stage in mastering drawing is applying color.
Refer to the first illustration in each tutorial as a reference. Experiment with crayons, colored pencils, or markers. For a more artistic touch, consider using watercolors or chalk.
Begin by applying the base color, then layer darker tones in areas that would naturally be in shadow or receive less light (typically the lower or underside of shapes). This technique is known as shading.
Once shading is done, introduce lighter hues where light would naturally fall (usually the upper sections of shapes, where sunlight would strike). This is called highlighting. Together, shading and highlighting add depth and realism to your artwork.
After filling in all the colors and achieving a result you're happy with, your drawing is complete. Great job!
