Cardio intervals can be performed in numerous locations, as we’re exploring in this month’s fitness challenge. From the convenience of your living room to outdoor activities like cycling or jogging, the possibilities are vast. However, heading to the gym and utilizing its array of cardio machines often proves to be the most straightforward option.
Which machine should you opt for, and how should you use it? A notable advantage of these machines is their pre-programmed routines, allowing you to let the onboard computer guide you through a 20-minute session. Alternatively, you can stick to your preferred interval pattern. (As previously discussed, alternating one minute of intense effort with one minute of rest is simple to follow and typically delivers an effective workout.)
The treadmill
Choose this if: You’re in running shoes and enjoy running or aim to improve your skills. Avoid it if you prefer a lower-impact activity or struggle to find comfort in running.
The elliptical
Opt for this if: You want a mindless workout that requires minimal effort. Its popularity stems from its ability to feel effortless even during intense sessions.
The bikes
Select this if: You’re looking to challenge yourself. Stationary bikes are ideal for high-intensity sprints, and spinning bikes allow you to adjust resistance instantly with a simple turn of the knob.
The stair climber
Choose this if: You’re aiming for an intense quad workout. Be cautious, as setting the resistance too high can turn it into more of a strength exercise than cardio. To avoid burning out your legs during intervals, keep the settings moderate and avoid relying on the arm rails for support.
The rowing machine
Opt for this if: You’re familiar with its proper use. (We can guide you on that.) Its standout benefit is engaging your entire body, including arms and core, rather than focusing solely on the lower body.
In my view, the best approach is to use all the options. Spending too long on one machine can become monotonous, but in a gym with diverse equipment, why limit yourself? Alternate between machines—start with a 5-minute interval on the treadmill, move to the elliptical next, and then switch to the bike. As long as the gym isn’t crowded, why not mix it up?
Share your thoughts: What’s your preferred approach to gym intervals, and do you have a go-to workout routine for your favorite machine?
