I’ve struggled with creating natural brow strokes to fill in sparse areas and have had too many experiences with bold brow gels that leave my brows looking painted on. My brows are naturally thick but have several patchy spots that need a little help, and I’m not interested in any semi-permanent eyebrow techniques, like microblading, microfeathering, or lamination.
Aside from clear pomades to keep my brows in place, I usually avoid tinted brow products. These days, I embrace a minimalist approach, so when I heard Merit was launching its Brow 1990 Gel Pencil and the newly reformulated Brow 1980 Volumizing Pomade, I was excited to see how they could improve my routine.
"Brows have always been a challenging category," says Merit's CMO, Aila Morin, in an interview with Mytour. "The concept of an easy-to-use, foolproof brow routine was incredibly appealing to us at Merit because of the widespread anxiety around brows. For years, we've been gathering feedback on Brow 1980 while refining our new brow pencil, Brow 1990. The result is a straightforward two-step routine that leaves you with fuller, more natural-looking brows."
Merit Brow 1990: Sheer Gel Eyebrow Pencil

This tinted mousse provides a long-lasting finish that stays in place without leaving a sticky residue or flaking, giving you fluffy brows thanks to nourishing ingredients like kaolin clay and vitamin B5. Both products are available in four shades: taupe, light brown, dark brown, and brown black. You can purchase either item individually for $24 or the new Brow Duo set for $44.
Much like the rest of Merit's collection, I found these two products to be incredibly easy to use. As Morin explains, the tiny gel pencil features an ultra-fine 0.9mm tip and a soft gel formula that provides a buildable, sheer color. Instead of mimicking individual hairs, it creates soft, natural-looking shadows, giving you a fuller brow with much less effort. It's also infused with oleoactif, a plant-based ingredient known to promote hair growth.
Merit Brow 1980: Volumizing Brow Pomade

The original Brow 1980 Volumizing Mousse subtly enhanced the color of brows, making them look fuller without weighing them down. However, it lacked the staying power customers were hoping for. After listening to feedback, Merit revisited their popular Brow 1980 Pomade, focusing on preserving what made it special while improving one crucial feature: hold. Additionally, it now offers 1.8 times more product than before, all at the same price.
The pencil and mousse are incredibly light yet pack a punch in color payoff, making them incredibly easy to use. The gel pencil smoothly glides across my skin, creating precise strokes to fill in my uneven brows for a microbladed effect in seconds. I then use the spoolie end to blend everything together before applying the brow pomade for a bold, sculpted look that holds strong even in the summer heat. Despite the stifling humidity and sweltering 90-degree days we've been experiencing here in Cincinnati, my brows remained flawless. These two products have quickly become my go-to, whether I'm going for a minimalist vibe or full glam.
Simplify your makeup routine with Merit's new Brow 1990 Sheer Gel Eyebrow Pencil and Brow 1980 Volumizing Brow Pomade, each priced at $24, or snag the Brow Duo for $44. Here are five other Merit products I can't imagine my routine without.
