Viewers of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel might dream of stepping into Midge's world, but her New York apartment was far from cheap, even in the 1950s. Refinery29, using data from StreetEasy, estimated the current value of her upscale Upper West Side home and how its price has skyrocketed since the show's late 1950s setting.
While Midge's building—just a floor below her parents—isn't a real place (she mentions a fictional address in the pilot), it draws inspiration from The Strathmore, a 48-unit high-rise on Riverside Drive in Manhattan. A comparable seven-room apartment in The Strathmore would now fetch nearly $9 million, as per recent sales data. (Check out the video below for a glimpse.)
Back in the day, the cost would have been more manageable—by New York's lofty standards. Today, real estate prices in the city are 19 times higher than in 1959, meaning Midge's apartment would have been around $460,000 then. Adjusted for inflation, that translates to roughly $4 million in today's dollars.
Since the era of Mrs. Maisel, New York has seen more than just a rise in living costs—food prices were significantly lower back then. Earlier this month, the iconic (though now-shuttered) Carnegie Deli temporarily reopened to celebrate the Emmy-winning Amazon series, offering a nostalgic 1950s menu that included sandwiches priced at just $.99.
