The actual number of COVID-19 cases in the US significantly surpasses the figures revealed through testing. However, testing remains a vital method to start understanding the extent of the outbreak. The Covid Tracking Project, an online resource, has compiled testing data from each state, allowing you to track the progress.
This tracker includes all states, the District of Columbia, and US territories such as Puerto Rico and American Samoa.

This tracker provides a convenient way to access your state’s COVID-19 data, but it comes with several limitations. For instance, states may follow different testing guidelines and report results in varying formats. Each state’s data includes explanatory notes, as illustrated in the screenshot above.
The tracker also archives historical data. Daily snapshots of each state’s statistics (e.g., New York’s data) allow you to observe how the numbers have evolved. Some states offer detailed breakdowns by county or include maps, while others provide only basic figures or a “no cases reported” update.
“The data is fragmented and inconsistent, so we aim to be transparent about our findings and how we manage them,” the tracker’s team explains. Given the current chaos, this approach is likely the most effective solution available.
