Sorbus aucuparia, a native to Europe, is the most widely cultivated species among a diverse group of similar shrubs and trees. While native mountain ashes are equally stunning, they tend to grow more like shrubs. The European variety stands out with its distinctly tree-like appearance.
Description of the mountain ash tree: This small to medium-sized tree, reaching up to 50 feet tall, features light grayish bark and an open, oval crown when fully grown. In the spring, it produces clusters of white flowers, which are followed by vibrant orange-red berries in the fall that attract birds. The deciduous leaves are toothed and pinnately compound, dark green during the summer, and transition to yellow or reddish hues in the fall.
How to Grow a Mountain Ash Tree: Plant in full sun and in rich, well-drained, acidic soil. It struggles in alkaline conditions and has a relatively short lifespan in such environments. The tree adapts well to transplanting. However, mountain ash trees are vulnerable to pests like borers and fireblight. For best results, grow them in the cooler northern regions where these problems are less common due to mild summer temperatures.
