Devotees of Studio Ghibli’s 1988 animated masterpiece My Neighbor Totoro will soon have the opportunity to relive this magical childhood adventure in theaters. The beloved Japanese film, which tells the story of two sisters discovering a mystical forest inhabited by extraordinary beings, will be screened at chosen theaters for three days in late September and early October, as reported by The A.V. Club.
This exclusive screening celebrates the 30th anniversary of My Neighbor Totoro, a groundbreaking work by director and animator Hayao Miyazaki that introduced many Americans to his artistry. In his four-star review, critic Roger Ebert praised the film, stating, “This is a children’s movie crafted for an ideal world, free of villains, battles, or fear. It’s a serene universe where encountering a mysterious giant creature in the woods leads to a peaceful nap on its belly.”
The re-release is a highlight of Studio Ghibli Fest 2018, a year-long event organized by GKIDS and Fathom Events. Throughout the year, nine iconic Studio Ghibli films are being showcased in theaters nationwide.
Two additional Miyazaki masterpieces will grace the big screen later this year: Spirited Away (2001) will be screened October 28-30, while Castle in the Sky (1986) will return November 18-20. For My Neighbor Totoro, dubbed screenings featuring Dakota and Elle Fanning as the sisters will occur on September 30 and October 3, with the original Japanese version (subtitled in English) available on October 1.
