©2007 Lenore Ramm Echinacea can help strengthen the immune system and reduce the risk of warts.Warts, caused by a virus, are mildly contagious and often unsightly, signaling a weakened immune system. Addressing warts involves a two-step approach: adopting habits that boost immunity and using garden plants to treat the wart directly. Herbal solutions such as echinacea and garlic can prevent and remove warts effectively.
Natural Remedies for Warts
To prevent warts, the key is to enhance immune function. A diet rich in whole grains and fresh produce, minimizing simple sugars, and ensuring adequate sleep will help the body produce vital immune factors that are essential for defense.
Echinacea is the primary herb studied for its immune-boosting properties, with others like licorice, goldenseal, and elderberry also being effective. These can all be taken internally. While echinacea is safe for long-term use in cases of severe immune issues, some people mistakenly recommend only short-term use.
The allium family aids in removing the wart itself. Crush a garlic clove and tape a small portion to the wart, taking care to protect the surrounding skin to prevent blistering. Alternatively, slice an onion in half, hollow out one side, and fill it with salt. As the salt extracts juice from the onion, use this liquid to apply to the wart multiple times a day.
A piece of aspirin taped to the wart has the same effect. Herbs containing salicylic acid, the active ingredient in aspirin, may also be beneficial. Freshly mashed yarrow can be applied directly to the wart.
Fresh dandelion is another herb that can help reduce unwanted growths. Break a stem or leaf of the dandelion and apply the white sap directly to the wart.
No matter which herb you choose, many common varieties — some of which you might find right in your garden — can assist in healing warts once they appear, and maintaining a healthy diet can help prevent new warts from forming.
