Non-verbal communication plays a crucial role in how we interact, yet many individuals struggle to interpret it effectively. When attempting to enter a conversation already underway, the positioning of participants' feet can indicate whether they are open to including others.
When two individuals are engaged in a discussion, interrupting unnecessarily should be avoided. Andrian, the author of Speak Like a Leader and a contributor to Social Dose, advises observing the feet of those involved as you approach:
If only their upper bodies turn toward you while their feet remain stationary, it signals they are deeply engrossed in a private conversation and prefer not to be disturbed. However, if both their torsos and feet shift in your direction, it indicates you are welcome to join.
While this may not apply universally, body language often reveals more than spoken words. It’s perfectly fine to approach and attempt to join, but remain mindful of the reactions you receive and adjust accordingly.
