When you think of peer-to-peer payments, PayPal is probably the first name that comes to mind. However, one major advantage services like Square Cash have over PayPal is the ability to cash out instantly. PayPal has now revealed plans to introduce this feature as well.
Bill Ready, PayPal's executive vice president, shared in the announcement:
Currently, PayPal’s P2P services, including Venmo and Xoom, facilitate transfers of over $7 million every hour between friends and family. U.S. PayPal users will soon be able to instantly move funds to their bank accounts via eligible debit cards linked to their PayPal account. These funds should generally be available within minutes, although some banks may require up to 30 minutes. A beta version of this service is already available to select PayPal users, with plans to roll it out to all U.S. users with compatible Visa or Mastercard debit cards in the coming weeks and months.
Instant transfers will incur a $0.25 fee per transaction. While regular transfers have been free, they take a few days to process, and in our fast-paced world, that just isn’t fast enough.
Services such as Square Cash and the upcoming Zelle already provide this benefit. Several major banks—including Chase, Ally, and Wells Fargo—have already teamed up with Zelle to offer real-time peer-to-peer payments for their customers. If you're an Ally customer, you can use the service either within the Ally app or through the Zelle app. Banks can set their own fees for Zelle, but so far, none have indicated plans to charge for bank-to-bank transfers, according to the New York Times.
PayPal and Venmo’s new feature will be accessible to most cardholders, PayPal claims, except for a few smaller institutions. You won’t be able to opt into the beta, but if you're part of it, you’ll see the option in the mobile or web app. Venmo will also have its own beta, and soon, all U.S. PayPal and Venmo users should gain access, according to PayPal.
