Initially created for children suffering from diarrhea, the electrolyte solution Pedialyte has become a go-to remedy for adults battling hangovers. In fact, a third of its consumers are now adults. While it may not completely eliminate your hangover, it could provide some relief.
Both hungover adults and children with stomach issues face a common problem: dehydration. Electrolyte beverages, like Pedialyte, include sodium, which reduces excessive urination and aids in rehydration. They also replenish lost electrolytes such as potassium. Unlike sports drinks, Pedialyte offers a higher concentration of electrolytes with fewer calories, making it a more efficient choice.
There’s some truth to the buzz around Pedialyte, which is why the brand has launched a new ad campaign. While avoiding the term 'hangover,' the campaign encourages adults to rehydrate, as seen in a May 6 tweet tagged #dayaftercinco.
However, Pedialyte isn’t a cure for hangovers. Hangovers involve more than just dehydration. Researchers are still studying the causes, but symptoms likely stem from a mix of alcohol withdrawal, toxic byproducts from alcohol metabolism, and immune system reactions. Unfortunately, Pedialyte can’t address these underlying issues.
