In collaboration with the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Peloton has announced a voluntary recall of their Original Peloton Bike. This decision follows numerous incidents where riders sustained injuries due to falls. Approximately 2.2 million bikes are affected, and the company is advising customers to cease using them immediately due to the risk of the seat breaking during operation.
The recall highlights that the seat post may unexpectedly fracture during use, posing a significant risk of falls and injuries. As of April 30, Peloton and the CPSC have received 35 reports of such incidents, with 13 individuals sustaining injuries ranging from wrist fractures to cuts and bruises.
Which Peloton model is under recall?
The recall applies to all original Peloton model Bikes purchased in the United States between January 2018 and May 2023. To determine if your bike is included, check for the “PL-01” model number label located on the inside front fork near the flywheel. Additionally, the bike’s frame will feature the red “P” logo followed by the white Peloton brand name. An image of the recalled model can be viewed here.
This recall does not impact Original Peloton Bike models sold outside the U.S., nor does it affect North America Bike+ or international Bike+ models.
Steps to take if your Peloton is recalled
The CSPC advises all owners of the Original Peloton Bike model to discontinue use until the seat post has been replaced.
Peloton is providing free seat post replacements to all owners, including those who purchased their bikes second-hand (as long as the bike is registered under their email). You can begin ordering your replacement seat post here. Although some users encountered an error message on Thursday morning, the site is now functioning properly. Peloton states that the new seat post can be “easily installed at home” and provides a video tutorial for guidance.
