Initially, Planned Parenthood Direct was a limited service offering mail-delivered birth control exclusively to California residents. Currently available in 27 states, the app is set to launch nationwide by the end of 2020, with added functionality for UTI treatment.
Update 9/6/2019: A previous version of this article stated the app would be available in all 50 states by the end of 2019. The correct timeline is by the end of 2020.
The app, free on iOS and Android, is currently accessible in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington.
To obtain a birth control prescription or UTI treatment, you must complete personal and medical details, then wait up to one business day for a clinician to assess if your case is suitable for a prescription. In certain states, a video consultation may be required. If your case is deemed too complex, you may need an in-person visit. Birth control is delivered to your home, while UTI prescriptions are sent to your chosen pharmacy.
According to Planned Parenthood via Business Insider, costs average $20 for birth control, $15 to $25 for a UTI consultation, and $4 to $60 for UTI medication, depending on the drug and insurance. Payments are made through the app. If affordability is an issue, they suggest reaching out to a local clinic for assistance.
