Podiatrists Share Insights on Comfortable Fall Footwear

“When selecting fall boots, ensure they aren’t too narrow at the heel or toes, as this restricts toe movement and function,” advised Dr. Adenike Sonaike, a podiatrist at Baker Street Health In Motion in Fair Lawn, New Jersey. “Boots made from sturdy materials like leather offer better support and adapt to your foot shape over time, enhancing comfort.”

Sonaike warns against trendy pointy-toed boots, which can cause joint pain, bunions, and calluses. For those with weak ankles or a history of sprains, she advises avoiding ‘glove’ or ‘sock’ boots. If opting for heeled boots, she recommends regular stretching to prevent Achilles tendinitis, suggesting toe touches to maintain tendon flexibility.

Michael Fishkin, a certified pedorthist at Northern Illinois Foot & Ankle Specialists, emphasizes the importance of matching footwear to your foot shape. “Ensure your toes aren’t cramped in narrow-toed boots. Ideally, there should be a thumbnail’s space between your longest toe and the boot’s end,” he explained.

While both experts prefer in-person fittings, they acknowledge the convenience of online shopping. They suggest reviewing return policies and ordering two sizes (your usual size and a half size up) to find the best fit. “Examine the side profile of the shoe for details like heel height, sole thickness, and arch support,” Sonaike added.
