Back in 1993, Prince famously replaced his name with a unique symbol, later dubbed the 'love symbol.' This bold move left journalists puzzled, as they struggled to pronounce or type the symbol. Writers who wished to use the symbol instead of the phrase 'The Artist Formerly Known as Prince' had to install a special text file on their computers. Warner Brothers, his record label, even distributed floppy disks containing the font to media outlets. Thought to be lost, the font was rediscovered by Mike Wehner of The Daily Dot in an unexpected location.
Wehner discovered the rare file while exploring the 1994 video game *Prince Interactive*, a point-and-click adventure set in Prince's Paisley Park Studios. The game featured artwork, puzzles, unreleased tracks, and an interview with Prince. Although the game is now unplayable without an emulator, Wehner found a crucial file in its 'FONTS' folder: a font named 'PrncTrue.'
The font file is in an outdated Font Suitcase format, but Wehner simplified the process by converting it into a TrueType Font file, compatible with both Mac and PC. Thanks to The Daily Dot, this unique font is now available for free download.
