If you had plans to dive into Elden Ring or Stray today, you might want to hold off. Your PS5 has a fresh update ready for download and installation. This update is particularly exciting for those with a 1440p monitor. On Wednesday, Sept. 7, Sony rolled out System Software 6.0 to PS5 users, introducing a range of new features and enhancements. The standout addition is the long-awaited 1440p support.
1440p gaming is gaining traction as it strikes a balance between the sharpness of higher resolutions and the performance demands of 4K. While the PS5 is fully equipped for 4K gaming, this update is a game-changer for those with 1440p monitors, enabling native output for a flawless visual experience.
However, there's a catch: games must explicitly support 1440p resolution to take full advantage of this feature. For titles that don’t, the PS5 will downscale its 4K output to fit your 1440p display. With this feature now live, it’s expected that more developers will incorporate 1440p support into their games moving forward.
It’s important to note that Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) isn’t compatible with 1440p resolution. VRR remains exclusive to 1080p and 4K, so if this feature is a priority, you’ll need to continue using those resolution settings.
Gamers have previously experienced 1440p on PS5 during Sony’s closed PlayStation beta testing phase. If you participated in the beta, you might have already explored this resolution option.
