Quartz vs. Granite: Environmental Impact

Advocates of quartz also argue it lasts longer than granite due to its nonporous nature, though some critics note that the resin used in its production is not biodegradable.
As with most products, the overall environmental impact of a countertop largely depends on the extraction process of the resource and the responsible manufacturing practices of the company involved.
Health Concerns Surrounding Quartz
If you're concerned about the potential risks to workers in the countertop manufacturing industry, granite may be the safer option for you.
One of the major criticisms of quartz is its association with serious health risks. In December 2023, Australia announced a ban on the production and import of engineered stone due to a significant increase in silicosis cases.
Silicosis is a dangerous lung disease caused by inhaling dust from silica-containing stones during the production of engineered stone products, such as quartz countertops. Although granite may also contain silica, engineered stones generally have much higher levels, making them far more hazardous to work with.
In the United States, by July 2023, at least 10 workers had died, and nearly 80 had become ill in California as a result of silicosis, prompting the state to consider implementing a ban similar to Australia's. Other states, such as Texas, Florida, and Washington, have also reported cases of the disease.
Although the federal government sets regulations for silica exposure in the workplace, many factories may not be adhering to the recommended standards or might even be completely out of compliance.
