If your collection of worn-out Barbies, Matchbox cars, or MEGA Bloks has outlived its usefulness, disposing of them responsibly—without sending them to a landfill—has become much simpler.
While those Barbie dolls from the ‘80s and ‘90s (complete with the “creative” haircuts or marker doodles from your sibling) might hold sentimental value, they’re likely just cluttering your space now—and no one else is eager to take them off your hands.
Thankfully, Mattel’s new “PlayBack” initiative allows you to return these old toys. The program aims to reclaim and recycle materials from the toys for use in future Mattel products. Even that Ken doll missing a foot (courtesy of the family pet) contains materials that can be transformed into new toys, ensuring his legacy lives on in a way that brings happiness to others. Similarly, if your children have outgrown or damaged their own versions of these toys, you can now recycle them guilt-free, knowing they’ll be repurposed sustainably.
Currently, the initiative is limited to the United States and Canada, accepting only Barbie, Matchbox, and MEGA toys. However, Mattel aims to expand the program to include all its brands in the future. Returning toys is straightforward: Visit Mattel’s website, complete a short form, and print a complimentary shipping label. Pack the toys as you prefer and send them off—no cleaning or repairs are necessary, but remember to remove any batteries before shipping.
This initiative is designed for toys that are no longer in playable condition. If your toys are still functional and in good shape, consider passing them on to friends or family, selling them, or donating them to a local charity instead.
