The toughest part of a difficult conversation is often just starting it. If you're feeling hesitant, shifting your perspective to view the conversation more positively can give you the boost you need.
Whether you're delivering bad news or providing critical feedback, the anticipation of the conversation can leave you anxious, stressed, or frustrated. Amy Gallo at Harvard Business Review recommends easing these emotions by rethinking the ‘difficult’ conversation as a regular exchange that can ultimately lead to a beneficial outcome:
For instance, instead of framing a performance review negatively, view it as a constructive discussion aimed at development. Or instead of saying “no” to your boss, present an alternative solution. This doesn’t mean you're sugarcoating; it's about acknowledging the challenge while keeping the tone as constructive as possible.
Though some conversations will address tough subjects, approaching them with the right mindset can make things smoother for everyone involved. The more constructive your approach, the better the outcome for all parties.
