When you sign up for services like Amazon Prime, your subscription typically renews automatically once it expires. If one of your cards becomes invalid, Amazon will fall back on a backup payment method.
As we've mentioned before, simply letting your credit card expire won't automatically opt you out of a subscription. Most card providers update their information with billers, ensuring they can still charge you.
For instance, as highlighted by Consumerist, Amazon will use any backup payment options you have stored. One customer learned this the hard way when Amazon used her debit card to renew Prime, draining her account and incurring bank fees. (Amazon refunded her, though).
To avoid surprises, consider keeping just one card on file with Amazon. While Amazon will charge any card linked to your account, it's also a good idea to monitor your subscription and cancel if you don't intend to renew. For more information, check out Consumerist’s full article at the link below.
