The way we spend our mornings can set the tone for the entire day, so many of our morning rituals are about doing what truly serves us. This means facing the device that constantly demands your attention, urging you to adopt its perspective – your phone.
Keep in mind that there is an entire industry that profits the more you obsess over your phone. If you check it first thing in the morning, you’re diving straight into their cycle of distraction.
Janelle Monáe understands this. She shared with Fast Company, “When I wake up, the first thing I do isn’t check my phone. It’s taking at least 10 deep breaths.” Begin your day in a way that reflects your desires.
Enable Do Not Disturb mode.
Both Android and iOS devices allow you to set a designated time frame where notifications won’t interrupt you. Rather than having this window end as soon as you wake up, try extending it for an extra half hour or even an hour.
Keep your phone plugged in
If you usually toss your phone into your pajama pocket as soon as you start your day, consider changing this habit. Turn off or snooze your alarm (if it’s on your phone), but then place it down. If you feel the need to use your phone for something specific like creating the perfect morning playlist, do that, and then set it aside once again.
Eat breakfast
Or skip breakfast, if that’s your choice. But before diving into your phone, consider what other activities might help you start the day. Perhaps brushing your teeth, getting dressed, or making coffee. You might even bake an egg in the toaster oven. If boredom strikes, grab a book, stare out the window, or just let your mind wander with its own quiet morning thoughts, instead of reading from a screen.
