Stairs endure heavy foot traffic, which means the carpet will deteriorate faster than in other areas. Replace your stair carpet by following these simple steps (pun intended).
Begin by removing the old, worn-out carpet along with the padding underneath. Inspect the stairs for any damage and fix any broken risers or steps.
Pre-cut your carpet to the required width and length to cover the stairs. It's okay to work in sections, but don't underestimate how much carpet you'll need.
Use a hammer stapler to attach carpet padding to each step. Keep the padding taut and staple it securely around the edges and in the center to hold it in place on the stairs.
Inspect the condition of the current carpet tack strips. These are the wooden strips with sharp tacks pointing upwards that hold the carpet in place. If they are intact and not water-damaged, they can be reused.
Begin installing your pre-cut stair carpet from the bottom step, working your way up towards the top.
Use a tool specifically designed for stairs to tuck the carpet under the first step, then employ a knee kicker to stretch the carpet across the step. Once the carpet is tight, use a pneumatic staple gun to secure it in place. Repeat this process for each step, and you'll have a freshly carpeted staircase in no time.
