Leather furniture, such as sofas or office chairs, often develops wrinkles with regular use. These 'comfort wrinkles' can vary from subtle waves to deep creases, detracting from the sleek appearance you initially loved about leather.
Thankfully, a blow dryer can help restore your cushions to their smooth, original state. Here’s how to do it.
What causes wrinkles to form on leather furniture?
When selecting a leather chair or sofa, you’ll find some pieces feature firm, tightly-stretched leather, while others boast softer, more pliable leather with a relaxed appearance. Furniture crafted from flexible leather, which offers a bit of stretch, typically provides greater comfort—though it is more susceptible to wrinkling. Additionally, like skin, leather naturally develops wrinkles as it ages.
Steps to eliminate wrinkles and creases from leather furniture
While leather wrinkling is entirely natural—and perfectly fine to leave as is—if you desire a sleeker look, follow these steps:
Moisten a clean cloth with a solution of mild dish soap and warm water—or a specialized leather cleaner—and gently clean the wrinkled areas of the chair or sofa.
Use a second clean cloth dampened with warm water to rinse the cleaned sections, then dry them with a fresh cloth or towel.
Set your blow dryer to its highest heat setting and turn it on.
Hold the blow dryer about eight to 10 inches away from the wrinkled area, moving it continuously to avoid concentrating heat on one spot for too long.
Keep blow drying until the heat begins to smooth out the wrinkles, which may take several minutes per section.
Once the leather appears smooth, turn off the blow dryer. If the furniture is clean and the leather has tightened, consider completing its refresh by applying a leather conditioner.
