The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are quite large, so you’ll probably need to rearrange your space to fit one of these consoles in your living room or workspace.
Fortunately, both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X—along with the more compact Xbox Series S—can be oriented either vertically or horizontally. This leads to the question: does one orientation offer advantages over the other?
Does the orientation of your console—vertical or horizontal—make a difference?
The orientation of your console won’t impact its performance or gameplay, but there are advantages and disadvantages to positioning your PS5 or Xbox Series X/S vertically or horizontally. In certain situations, standing your console upright can improve airflow efficiency, and it also takes up less space, making it ideal for tighter areas.
On the other hand, placing your console horizontally provides a more stable base with a lower center of gravity, minimizing the chance of it tipping over. This makes it a better choice if you have limited vertical space above the console.
Ultimately, the “best” orientation for your console comes down to personal preference. Choose the position that fits your room layout and ensures adequate ventilation. Games will run the same regardless of orientation, and as long as the console has proper airflow, overheating won’t be an issue—just make sure you don’t accidentally place it upside down.
With that said, let’s briefly review how to correctly set up your PS5, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S in both vertical and horizontal configurations.
PlayStation 5

The PlayStation 5 comes in two variants: the standard edition with a disc drive and the “digital” edition without one. Both versions can be positioned either horizontally or vertically, and the setup process is the same for each. Regardless of orientation, the PS5 rests on its detachable base.
In the vertical position, the base attaches to the console’s broadest side and is secured using the provided screw. Due to the PS5’s sizable and irregular shape, standing it upright is ideal for saving space on desks or entertainment centers. However, ensure the console is firmly attached to the base, as it can be more susceptible to tipping if knocked while in the vertical position.

The PS5 can also be used horizontally, but its asymmetrical design can be confusing. There’s no obvious indicator of which side should face up, and the stand attaches to both sides of the console (for some reason), making it easy to accidentally place it upside down. This could harm the internal components. In fact, even Sony’s official advertisements have mistakenly depicted the console upside down.
To ensure proper setup, position the disc slot on the bottom for disc-drive PS5 models. For digital-only versions, the side with the bulge should face downward.
Xbox Series X

The Xbox Series X is designed to work both vertically and horizontally straight out of the box, offering a simpler setup compared to its PlayStation counterpart. Microsoft’s official advertisements often showcase the Series X in a vertical position, as it optimizes airflow. That said, placing it horizontally is equally safe and effective.
When positioning the console vertically, ensure the rubber feet are on the bottom and the large cooling fan faces upward. From the front view, the Xbox logo light should appear in the upper-left corner, with the disc slot positioned in the lower-left.
For horizontal placement, the side with the disc drive and Xbox logo should face outward, with the disc slot at the top left and the Xbox light in the upper right. Similar to the PS5, placing the Xbox Series X upside down can damage its internal electronics, harm any inserted discs, and increase the risk of overheating.
Xbox Series S

The Xbox Series S is simpler to set up compared to its larger counterpart, with a design that clearly indicates the correct orientation for both vertical and horizontal placement.
When positioning the Series S vertically, ensure the side with the large black fan vent has the fan at the top and the engraved Xbox logo near the bottom. The circular Xbox logo-shaped power light on the front should be in the upper-left corner when viewed head-on.
For horizontal placement, the large fan vent should face upward, and the Xbox-shaped power light will be positioned in the upper-right corner.
