While placing a laundry room next to a bedroom may offer convenience, be prepared for the sounds of slamming doors and washing cycles. Whether remodeling or constructing a new space, there are several cost-effective strategies to reduce sound transmission between rooms.
Since sound travels efficiently through air, ensure your walls are properly insulated and that there are no gaps between studs or around electrical boxes. Spray foam insulation is the most energy-efficient option and excels at soundproofing.
Before sealing the walls, wrap the electrical boxes with acoustical putty pads. You may need multiple pads to completely cover the box. This seal prevents sound from passing through the gaps around the box, improving sound isolation.
The final step involves installing double layers of 5/8” drywall and applying acoustical sealant. This type of sealant won't shrink, dry out, or harden, greatly extending its effectiveness compared to standard caulk. These last two steps will create a strong sound barrier between rooms at minimal cost.
Here’s an extra soundproofing tip: If your room has a vertical drainpipe running through the wall, consider using cast-iron pipes instead of PVC. With PVC, you'll hear the rush of water every time it’s flushed, but with cast-iron, the sound will be completely silent. Watch the video above for more details.
