When striving for better health, many people often overlook the bigger picture. Rather than getting lost in the minor details, start by focusing on the basics. Apply the '95/5 Rule' to prioritize the essential principles of good health.
The '95/5 Rule' (a term used loosely) was introduced by Dr. Yoni Freedhoff from the University of Ottawa and Weighty Matters. He suggests that instead of obsessing over the smallest aspects of an optimal lifestyle, you should direct your efforts toward a few simple, practical truths that he believes can have a much more profound impact on your life.
Dr. Freedhoff advises that you spend 95% of your health-focused energy on the following:
Preparing your meals from scratch and sharing them with family and friends
Exercising (it doesn’t need to be daily)
Avoiding smoking
Getting adequate sleep
Indulging in moderation
Consuming alcohol moderately
Maintaining strong friendships and relationships
In short, we can all collectively breathe a sigh of relief and say, No freakin’ duh! The seven items listed above contribute 95% of the benefits to your well-being, happiness, and health, far more than any irrelevant minute health nonsense, which makes up the remaining 5%. As Dr. Freedhoff observes:
...compared to the impact of the 95%, that 5% might add a few days or weeks to one's
life span
, but stressing over it would certainly drain a significant amount of
quality
.
