Microsoft and Amazon have joined forces to allow Xbox Game Pass members to download games and receive service updates through Alexa voice commands.
Currently, the Alexa integration is exclusive to U.S.-based Xbox Game Pass subscribers, but Amazon has announced plans to expand the feature globally. This functionality is compatible with all Alexa-enabled devices, such as Echo speakers, Echo Buds, the Alexa app on smartphones, and even Echo Auto for cars. However, users must activate the Xbox Game Pass skill before use.
To activate the skill, simply say, “Alexa, enable the Xbox Game Pass skill.” Alternatively, you can enable it via the Alexa Skills webpage or the “Skills & Games” section in the Alexa app. Once activated, Alexa can provide information on available games, assist in locating specific titles, and even initiate remote downloads to your console.
Most of these commands are ready to use right away, but linking your Xbox console to Alexa is required for game downloads. This can be done in two ways:
Using the Alexa mobile app
Launch the Alexa app on your iPhone or Android smartphone.
Access the side menu and tap on “Add Device.”
Choose “Game Console.”
Select “Xbox.”
Complete the setup by following the on-screen prompts.
On Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S
Start by pressing the Xbox button on your controller to bring up the guide.
Navigate to Profile & system > Settings > General > Power mode & start-up, and choose “Instant on.”
Then, head to Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Digital assistants.
Switch on the “Enable digital assistants” option.
Log in with your Xbox account when asked.
After linking your Xbox to Alexa, simply say, “Alexa, install (game name) from Xbox Game Pass” to begin the download process.
For enhanced Alexa functionality on your Xbox One or Series X/S, you can install the Alexa Xbox app from the Microsoft Store. This app allows you to use the digital assistant directly on your console for tasks like checking weather and news, managing smart home devices, and navigating your Xbox or launching games with voice commands.
