Over the past four years, many devices removed the headphone jack, but the Nintendo Switch took a different approach, exclusively supporting wired headphones without an easy way to connect Bluetooth headphones or earbuds like AirPods. Previously, costly solutions were required for wireless audio on the Switch, but now it’s both simple and free.
Previously, streaming Switch audio to Bluetooth headphones or earbuds required purchasing a Bluetooth adapter, such as HomeSpot’s model. This adapter would connect to either the Switch or its dock, depending on your setup. While these adapters still work, they’re no longer essential.
The 13.0.0 Switch update now includes native Bluetooth audio support
This feature is entirely new to the Nintendo Switch 13.0.0 update. To access it, ensure your system is updated to at least version 13.0.0. Navigate to Settings > System and check the Current version under System Update. If it shows 13.0.0 or higher, you’re ready. If not, select System Update to install the latest version.
Step-by-Step Guide to Pairing AirPods and Other Bluetooth Devices with Your Switch
Once your Switch is updated, head to Settings > Bluetooth Audio. Click on “Pair Device,” and your Switch will start searching for nearby Bluetooth devices. Ensure the device you want to connect is in pairing mode. (If unsure how to enable pairing mode, refer to your device’s instructions.)
For instance, with AirPods Pro, place both earbuds in the charging case, press and hold the button on the back, and open the case. A white light on the front indicates pairing mode. Watch your Switch screen for the AirPods Pro to appear. Once the device name shows up, select it and allow the Switch to complete the pairing process. A successful connection will display the message:
Connected to Bluetooth audio.
You can connect up to two wireless controllers simultaneously while using Bluetooth audio.
Bluetooth audio will temporarily disconnect during local communication.
However, there are additional limitations: the microphone on your Bluetooth headphones won’t work, and you may notice a slight audio delay when using Bluetooth audio devices.
How to Unpair Bluetooth Headphones from Your Switch
Disconnecting Bluetooth audio devices from the Switch is simpler than pairing them. Navigate to Settings > Bluetooth Audio, select the connected device, and choose “Disconnect Device” to end the connection. To remove the device entirely, select “Remove Device” instead.
