Is your Roku acting up? Perhaps you were eager to stream HBO Max or excited to catch Hawkeye on Disney+, only to find your Roku isn’t cooperating. With the holiday season around the corner, many of us will have extra time to enjoy TV, but that won’t be possible if your Roku apps are malfunctioning. Fortunately, a solution is likely within reach.
Why is your Roku device failing to function?
The problem seems to stem from Roku OS 10.5. Although this update was released in October, not all Roku devices were able to install it immediately. For instance, Roku TV owners have only recently begun receiving the update, which explains why many of the current complaints are coming from users of these devices.
Roku states that only “older” models are impacted by the 10.5 issue; this includes Roku TV model 7XXX and Roku Ultra models 4660, 4661, 4662, and 4670.
Although Roku TV users may have encountered this bug recently, some have reported experiencing it for weeks. Whether your Roku apps have been inaccessible for days or weeks, the situation is undeniably frustrating. Not only did you invest in Roku’s technology, but you’re also paying for streaming services like Prime Video, Paramount+, Disney+, HBO Max, ESPN, and others that you can no longer use. Paying for these services only to be limited to mobile viewing feels like a poor value.
Steps to Resolve the Roku OS 10.5 Issue
While Roku previously acknowledged the problem, it has now released a solution for impacted devices. The company is rolling out a patch to address the issue. However, Roku advises users to manually check for and install the update instead of relying on automatic updates.
To search for an update on your Roku, press the Home button on your remote, navigate to Settings, then select System, followed by System Update, and finally Check Now. Your Roku will then scan for available updates. If the patch is ready, it will appear here, allowing you to download and install it.
Roku emphasizes that this approach should only be applied to devices impacted by the streaming issue. If your device is functioning normally, you can let updates download and install automatically as usual.
If your device isn’t listed here and no update is available yet, visit this Roku support page for the most recent updates directly from the company.
