Even when you shop with a list, it's easy to go over budget. A few extra items slip into your cart, and suddenly, you're spending more than you intended. To avoid this, try using a 'do not buy' list while you shop.
This strategy is especially helpful if you're prone to buying things just because they’re on sale, only to realize at home that you already have more than enough. Epicurious explains this approach:
Before heading to the store, take stock of your kitchen. Along with making a list of what you need, write down the items you don’t need—the things you already have enough of but might be tempted to purchase. Whenever one of us spots something we have too much of, we add it to the 'Do Not Buy' section of the grocery list on the fridge, just as we do with the things we need.
