Resolution-setting seasons are filled with grand dreams. You’re bound to have an excellent year, and an even better January. Whether it’s adopting a workout routine, writing that book, or decluttering your space – any of these goals are achievable once you figure out what other commitments you're willing to cut back on.
Everything you do requires time, energy, and often some form of financial investment. Every minute spent working out at the gym is time away from writing your novel, meal prepping, or tidying up your home. I believe in you; I believe you’re capable of anything. But I don’t believe you can do everything.
Before diving into that new habit or lofty goal, take a moment to decide what you’ll be deprioritizing in order to make room for this new endeavor. Perhaps you’ll read more books by cutting back on TV time. Maybe you’ll work out by negotiating with your partner so they handle the kids in the morning while you hit the gym, and in return, you take over bedtime so they can work on their own project. Feel free to get creative. You may even find you can manage more than you initially thought.
It’s perfectly fine to pause something temporarily. Maybe you take a break from the gym to focus on decluttering. The key is to have a strategy for returning. You could switch from daily gym visits to home workouts twice a week and put your membership on hold for just one month. Then, when February rolls around, it's back to the gym. It's better to have a plan in place than to let it happen by chance with no way to bounce back.
