If you're aiming to run faster, weightlifting might feel like a distraction. However, recent research reveals that strength training improves your running efficiency.
The studies examined runners who incorporated strength training into their routine versus those who didn't. After at least four weeks, those who trained in the gym were able to maintain the same pace while consuming 3-4% less oxygen. In other words, they ran faster with the same effort. Their “running economy” improved.
Another positive finding from the analysis: strength training sessions didn’t need to be intense. Most participants used moderate weights, didn’t push to failure, and kept their workouts brief with just a few exercises per session.
The studies only compared runners who added gym sessions to their routine against those who didn’t, so they don’t offer guidance on whether to replace a running day with strength training. However, we can confidently say that time spent in the gym isn’t wasted—it seems to provide a clear benefit to your running performance.
