Protecting your hearing is crucial, and while we’ve previously recommended using earplugs at concerts or during loud films, there are other, less obvious places where earplugs can be a lifesaver—even in environments not typically associated with noise hazards.
Hospitals
Anyone who has spent a night in a hospital knows how challenging it can be to sleep. With constant lighting, chatter from staff and roommates, and various disruptions, rest becomes elusive. A simple pair of earplugs, combined with a sleep mask, can significantly improve your chances of a peaceful night.
During your travels
Earplugs can be a lifesaver for sleeping on planes, muffling the noise from a loud hotel neighbor’s TV, or reducing the regret of booking a room near a busy highway, train tracks, construction zones, or noisy animals.
This is especially true if you’re sharing a room. Let’s face it—people snore, talk in their sleep, or make other noises. Instead of waking up to nudge your roommate, simply pop in your earplugs. Just ensure your alarm is set loud enough to wake you in the morning.
The library or coffee shop
Coffee shops can be ideal workspaces, with the hum of espresso machines and low chatter creating a calming backdrop. However, when conversations nearby become too distracting, earplugs (or noise-canceling headphones) can help you focus and stay productive.
While riding a motorcycle
The constant noise inside a motorcycle helmet can be overwhelming (or so I’ve been told), which is why specialized motorcycle earplugs exist. They’re worth considering for your next ride or any situation where wind or road noise becomes unbearable.
During swimming
For those susceptible to swimmer’s ear, waterproof earplugs are a practical solution. They’re versatile too—ideal for swimming, surfing, kayaking, or any water-based activity where ear protection is needed.
