Sweet Gum Tree Description: The sweet gum tree starts with a pyramidal shape when young, gradually maturing into a tall, rounded form that can reach over 100 feet. Its bark is a gray-brown hue, deeply textured with furrows. In the second year, the stems develop corky wings that are visually striking. The tree's leaves are shaped like maple leaves, with five pointed lobes and finely serrated edges. They are a rich, glossy green during summer and transition to yellow and purple-red in the fall. The tree’s round fruit clusters resemble small balls and often remain throughout winter, resembling woody ornaments hanging from bare branches.

How to Grow a Sweet Gum Tree: Transplant the tree when it is young, as mature sweet gums are sensitive to root disturbance. Newly planted trees may experience little growth during the first two to three years. While this tree naturally thrives in rich, moist soils, it is quite versatile in cultivation. It is notably one of the most pH-tolerant trees, flourishing in both acidic and alkaline environments.

Uses of the Sweet Gum Tree: The sweet gum is an excellent choice for planting in parks, large properties, and along streets, as long as the expansive roots do not interfere. It is especially striking in the fall when its foliage transforms.
