We’re familiar with tipping at restaurants, cafes, and salons, but what about while traveling? Apart from taxi and rideshare drivers, who else deserves a tip? Are there any service workers we might be overlooking who contribute to a smoother, more enjoyable trip?
The Washington Post offers a quiz to test whether you’re an expert in tipping while traveling or a bit too stingy. Here's a sample question:
You hop on a free shuttle from the rental car lot to the terminal, and the driver helps with your bag, unloading it from the bus to the curb. Do you leave a tip?
I missed that one, if you're wondering—but I did get the questions about tipping hotel housekeeping staff right!
The thing about tipping is that many of us depend on external cues to tell us when and how much to tip: we toss our change into a tip jar, fill in a line at the bottom of a receipt, or select one of the preset options in an app. But when you're traveling, those reminders aren’t always there; for example, your complimentary shuttle doesn’t have a touchscreen prompting you to tip the driver. (At least, not yet.)
That’s why quizzes like this can help you figure out when it’s right to tip next time you’re traveling—and how much extra cash you’ll need to pack.
