The Tamarack tree, also known as Eastern Larch, is one of the few conifers that shed their needles in the fall. Before this occurs, it displays stunning autumn colors. Native to much of northern North America, the Tamarack is often overlooked as a landscaping tree, despite being just as intriguing as many non-native species commonly used in its place.
Description of the Tamarack Tree: This is a conical-shaped tree that typically grows to about 40 feet in cultivation. It would make an ideal "Christmas tree" if it didn't shed its needles in winter. The branches have yellowish-brown stems, which give the tree a pleasing look even without the needles. The needles, which grow in clusters, are soft and blue-green, changing to a golden yellow in the fall. Its small, egg-shaped cones complete the tree's distinctive appearance.
How to grow the Tamarack Tree: In its natural habitat, the Tamarack thrives in cool, moist environments, but it has proven itself to be adaptable to various growing conditions when cultivated. It prefers slightly acidic soils over alkaline ones and cannot tolerate shade or air pollution.
Uses for the Tamarack Tree: The Tamarack is an excellent choice for wet soils where many other trees would struggle to grow. It creates a striking visual impact when planted in groves or rows.
Tamarack Tree-related Species: There are several other species of larch, all very similar in appearance and usage. Some of these species offer dwarf or weeping varieties.
Scientific Name of the Tamarack Tree: Larix laricina
