Throughout history, whenever systems of governance and societal frameworks have been established, people have always found reasons to challenge them. Whether peaceful or violent, protests are ultimately a means for those whose voices go unheard to demand change. In extreme cases, when people feel conventional methods fall short, they may resort to more radical actions to push for the change they desire.
10. Tibetans Self-Immolate in Protest

China has a longstanding record of suppressing the Tibetan population, creating harsh living conditions. As technology progresses and crowd-control techniques become more sophisticated, many Tibetans fear retribution for speaking out. In response, some have resorted to the extreme act of self-immolation, setting themselves on fire to make a defiant statement against the oppression they endure.
Sadly, the effects of this act don’t always result in a quick death, and the individuals endure days of excruciating pain. These protesters are not seeking to be reduced to mere sensational news stories; their ultimate desire is for peace and safety for their people, and they see no other way to make their voices heard.
9. Russian Artist Nails His Scrotum to Red Square

On Police Day in Russia last year, performance artist Pyotr Pavlensky took to Red Square with a provocative aim—to stage a protest that would serve as a symbol for the apathy, political indifference, and despair that pervade contemporary Russian society. However, his execution of the protest was certainly unconventional. He first stripped naked in the public square, then sat down and nailed his scrotum to the ground.
Unsurprisingly, he was arrested. But this wasn’t the first time Pavlensky has gone to extreme lengths to make a statement. One of his more bizarre protests involved symbolizing the Russian government's oppression of its citizens by wrapping himself in excruciatingly sharp barbed wire while completely naked.
8. Refugees in Australia Stitch Their Lips Together

As previously mentioned, refugees in Australia are frequently detained in centers where they are treated as criminals. Protests against these centers are not rare, as the conditions are often intolerable. Families are torn apart, and the process for granting visas to genuine refugees is painfully slow.
While some protests involve hunger strikes, self-harm, or even suicide, one notable form of protest that has emerged in Australian detention centers is the excruciating act of sewing one’s lips shut. In 2002, 58 refugees at a detention facility took this extreme measure. Then, in 2010, 10 more refugees at a protest on Christmas Island did the same, followed by reports in 2013 of additional protests where refugees once again sewed their lips together.
7. Indian Villagers Stand in Water for Two Weeks

A group of villagers in India are protesting the government’s decision to open a local dam, which will flood their village, destroying their homes and farmland. The government argues that the dam needs to be opened because the water level is rising too high, but while this may be a legitimate concern, they are legally required to find new housing for the displaced people—a responsibility that has yet to be fulfilled.
In response to the government’s refusal to provide assistance, many villagers have resorted to a dramatic protest: standing waist-deep in water for weeks. The protest’s symbolism is unmistakable, but the dangers they face are far from symbolic. Protesters report that rain has made their suffering even worse, and they are also being attacked by various creatures living in the water.
6. Thai Citizens Throw Their Own Blood at Government Buildings

Blood has always been seen as a powerful symbol, and while some protesters use animal blood to make their point, protesters in Thailand took a more radical approach a few years ago. They believed that not only did blood carry a certain grim symbolism, but human blood would send a much stronger message regarding their view that the current government was illegitimate.
To make their protest even more striking, the demonstrators set up tents specifically to collect blood donations, which they would store and then use to splash against government buildings. While organizations like the Red Cross expressed concern over potential health risks from mixing donated blood, the protesters remained steadfast, believing this act would effectively convey their message.
5. Performance Artist Suspends Herself Using Fish Hooks

The growing demand for shark fin soup has fueled a brutal practice called “shark finning,” where fishermen slice off a shark's fin and discard the rest of its body back into the ocean. Alarmed by this practice, artist Alice Newstead, fearing it could lead to the extinction of sharks, decided to stage a protest in the most graphic way possible. She painted her body to resemble a shark and had large metal fish hooks painfully embedded into her shoulder flesh.
To prevent the hooks from tearing her body apart, she supported herself with her feet, yet still hung suspended for 15 minutes with hooks embedded in her skin, blood dripping from her wounds. It’s unclear whether her actions warrant applause for commitment or a recommendation for professional help.
4. Man Demolishes His Own House with a Bulldozer

In 1978, the residents of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, were furious as their property taxes nearly doubled. While most would take the standard route of raising their concerns at city hall or launching a campaign, one car dealer thought the only way to effectively send a message was to take a truly outrageous step.
His initial plan was to assemble a crowd and set fire to his entire house. He believed this would be a fitting way to express his frustration, reasoning that the government couldn’t tax a home that had been destroyed. However, the fire department disagreed, citing safety concerns, and prohibited him from carrying out the plan. Undaunted, he decided to demolish the house with a bulldozer instead, in an act of defiance.
3. Man Takes Drastic Action to Prove a Point

Imagine finding the perfect person, the one you're destined to be with, and you’re certain that nothing could stand in the way of your future together. That is, unless you live in a country where arranged marriages are still the norm. In places like Egypt, parents often take the lead in orchestrating marriages, and these decisions are heavily influenced by one's social standing.
A young Egyptian man from an affluent background fell deeply in love with a girl from a lower social class. Determined to be with her, he sought his father's approval, but his father insisted on an arranged marriage with someone of equal status. In an act of desperation and defiance against societal expectations, he chose to sever his own genitals. Sadly, the paramedics were unable to reattach the severed body part.
2. Japanese Boy Takes Drastic Action to Protest School Closure

Japan, with its notably high suicide rate, particularly among the youth, is no stranger to the immense pressure its society places on students. The announcement of a school merger sent shockwaves through the student body, particularly for one 11-year-old boy who felt devastated by the decision. He believed the consequences of the merger would ruin his life and that of his classmates, driving him to take extreme action.
Feeling utterly helpless in his ability to prevent the change, the boy made the tragic decision to throw himself in front of a bus. Before his death, he left behind a heartfelt note that read, “Please stop the plan to abolish and merge schools in exchange for the death of an innocent person.” He is also believed to have sent a message to his mother, expressing his love for her before taking his life.
1. UK Man Pushes Nut Seven Miles With His Nose

Mark McGowan, a man from the UK, was burdened by the crushing weight of student loan debt, a struggle many can relate to. While most individuals would protest in more conventional ways, McGowan chose a bizarre form of resistance. He lay on his stomach for nearly two weeks, pushing a small nut across 11.2 kilometers (7 miles) using only his nose, ultimately bringing the nut to the residence of the UK’s Prime Minister as a statement against the financial burden.
But McGowan’s nut-shoving endeavor wasn’t his first foray into unconventional protest. More recently, he made headlines again by using his toe to push a bus for nearly 30 meters (100 feet) in a protest against traffic policies he opposed.
