Films have the power to shape culture and create lasting memories. But at the other end of the spectrum, there are films so disappointing they leave you regretting ever pressing play. In the middle lie movies that are simply dull. But how do we measure such a personal, subjective reaction?
To find out, consumer tech site Uswitch.com went straight to the heart of the matter—viewers. The site examined IMDb user ratings for negative keywords and unfavorable reviews that suggest a movie isn't just bad but a total time-waster.
Here’s a list of some of the most uninspiring films from recent years, according to their findings:
- The Last Airbender (2010)
- Annabelle (2014)
- Suicide Squad (2016)
- Total Recall (2012)
- Battle Los Angeles (2011)
- Justice League (2017)
- Green Lantern (2011)
- Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999)
- Alice in Wonderland (2010)
- Clash of the Titans (2010)
- The Wolfman (2010)
- Ice Age: Continental Drift (2012)
- White House Down (2013)
- X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)
- Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 (2013)
At the top of the list is director M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender, a live-action version of the beloved Nickelodeon series that clearly didn’t meet the sky-high expectations of its fanbase. This fate is eerily similar to the reception of the first Star Wars prequel, and a 2012 remake of the 1990 film Total Recall struggled to prove it had a purpose.
